Review: The Morganville Vampires Series by Rachel Caine

Ignore the haters and feel the love for The Morganville Vampires series by Rachel Caine. The series revolves around 16 year old Claire, who is brilliant enough to land herself early entry into college but silly enough to hang around after being tossed down the stairs by the towns mean girl.

Leaving Morganville is not really an option anyway, not without permission from the creepy head vampire, the Founder of Morganville, Amelie. Claire won’t get permission either as she has been drawn to Morganville for a purpose and is kept there throughout the series for various reasons, one of which being that the Vamps are dying and they need someone smart enough to help the eccentric/insane science vamp Myrnin- and his vampire bunny slippers- develop a cure or they all will be dust in no time.

Love interest Shane is equal parts tough guy and scared teen boy, slightly older, and overly protective, he complements Clair’s mature yet impulsive personality nicely. The up and down nature of the interaction between them is resolved quickly in the first few books and their devotion to each other becomes a stable truth thought the series.

Best friend Eve- the goth- is a key character throughout, her personal growth and love story with the equally enticing Michael -the ghost/ vamp- has you at times wishing for the Claire story to step aside for a moment just to find out more. They hold the forbidden love card, and it is a more painful path for these two to reach their blessed happy ending.

Ghosts, scientists, humans, vampires, a spooky semi-alive house, portal traveling and vampire hunters are some of the fun that awaits you in this extremely well written young adult series. The characters are likable but real, guilty of such things as pride, lust and greed. They are human after all, well… mostly.

This series starts out with one teen girl getting herself caught up in a world so far from what her brilliant brain ever imagined existed and ends with a strong young woman, sure of herself, her mind and her heart. Read through the first book, Glass Houses knowing that it is the first step into an amazing world you will be sad to say goodbye to by Daylighters, the fifteenth and final book.

Thankfully Rachel Caine has blessed us with a peek into some of the Vampire tales of Morganville in her latest book Midnight Bites: Stories of the Morganville Vampires. This die hard fan can’t wait to sink her teeth into this one, and hopes as you will too, that there are many more stories to come from such a talented author.

4.5 stars for The Morganville Vampires Series, the only fault I can find is that it ended.

Rebecca’s love of storytelling began with her curled up on her mother’s lap, and only grew with her throughout her life. She started a family and settled into her home in a small town on the coast of NSW, continuing to feed her creativity in any way possible, creating custom cakes, original artworks and writing. Right now Rebecca is putting the final touches on her Debut novel Enchanting the Fey which will be out later this year. You can follow her on twitter here.
