I adore the festive season. Of course I love getting pressies (books! stationary! running stuff! chocolate!) but even more I love giving them. I always try to keep the word count ticking over a little and at least read something amazing but inevitably the writing loses out to the celebrations.
Now it’s a new year which means I need (and want) to get back into it.
5 tips that help me get back into my writing routine:
- Make sure I’m super excited about the project. This might seem like a no brainer but enthusiasm for the story helps.
- Start with small time/word count goals. I try not to set myself up for failure. Success breeds success.
- Rewards are good. Always.
- Make writing a priority.
- Give myself a break if things come up. Family/friends/occasionally interacting with non-imaginary people is important.
Any other ideas?
I always wanted to write. I’ve worked as a lab assistant, a pizza delivery driver and a high school teacher but I always pursued my first dream of creating stories. Now, I live with my family near Adelaide, halfway between the city and the sea, and am lucky to spend my days (and nights) writing young adult fiction.
