The Thinking Cap – Swag Ideas

This week my house is an absolute mess. I’m flying to Qld on Friday for Readers and Writers Down Under, and I have stuff everywhere. Books, boxes, swag, bubble wrap, banners, paper bags—the list is endless. And that’s before I’ve even thought about clothes!

I get really excited about these events because not only do I get to rub shoulders with a bunch of awesome authors, I get to meet the people who are interested in my books. For me that’s a big deal, because without our readers, authors would pretty much be talking to themselves. (I do that anyway, but for completely different reasons.)

Because I’ll be meeting all these wonderful people, I wanted to have something equally wonderful to give them. So, for the past few weeks I’ve had my thinking cap on in the way of swag, and I thought I’d share some of my ideas. Below is a list of swag I’ve either used myself, or received at book events.

  • Paper bookmarks
  • Postcards
  • Flyers
  • Badges
  • Magnets
  • Ribbon bookmarks
  • Key rings
  • Phone charms
  • Bag charms
  • Temporary tattoos
  • Bubbles
  • Lip balm
  • Pens
  • Rubber bracelets

As well as my usual paper bookmarks and postcards, here are some things I’ll be taking with me this weekend. I like receiving items I can use, and I wanted to give away something a bit different this time.

I came up with the idea of bubbles because in my books my angels can orb (travel by balls of light) and bubbles kind of look like balls of light … kind of.

And tattoos! With these I wanted something fun, and I love how they turned out.

This type of swag is relatively inexpensive, and more exciting than the regular paper bookmark (which I still like receiving because you can never have too many bookmarks). I’ll also have some lip balms and magnets to give away, and in the future I’d love to try badges and rubber bracelets.

My list is something I hope to add to over time, so if you have any awesome ideas or you’ve received something really cool, let me know in the comments.
